On September 1, 2024, Eric’s Segway scooter faced an intense theft attempt outside Chicago's Ogilvie Train Station, one of the city’s busiest transit hubs. Valued at $1,200, his scooter was secured to a public bike rack using a LITELOK X1 and a motion detector alarm. Eric had parked it there before heading to the suburbs for a Labor Day BBQ.
When Eric returned that afternoon, it was clear his scooter had been the target of a lengthy and determined attack. The would-be thief had ripped off and smashed his alarm to pieces and left behind a mess of angle grinder debris around the lock. As Eric described, “The lock was in near-new condition, so the rust colour you see is the massive amounts of angle-grinder disk debris.”
The signs told the story: the thief had made multiple cuts from six different angles in an attempt to break through the X1, yet the lock held strong, showing only surface damage. Eric estimated that the angle grinder disk must have been completely worn down from the attempt. In the end, the thief left empty-handed, and Eric still had his scooter.
Reflecting on the experience, Eric shared his relief and satisfaction: “I don’t know what is more satisfying, the fact I still have my $1000+ scooter or knowing the thieves walked away frustrated and empty-handed.”
Thanks to the resilience of the LITELOK X1, Eric’s prized scooter survived what could have been a costly loss.
